LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN
I was nervous to post this worrying how it may come across, but then I thought, fuck it, this is important :)
Over the summer my blood work from my physical came back saying that I had hyperthyroidism (which is pretty common I have come to find out) - a condition where your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine – through Graves’ Disease - which is an autoimmune disease that affects, you guessed it, the thyroid.
Feeling pretty confused – as I’ve never been in a healthier place in my life – it actually made sense because my mom had the same thing many years ago and was able to cure it naturally.
I was advised by my doctor to see an endocrinologist, who read the basics of my blood results and gave me two options as if from a script he had been reading from for the last 30 years of his life. The two options were:
1. To take an anti-thyroid drug that will likely give you a list of side effects, and likely only make the issue disappear for only a little while … so not fixing the problem at all.
2. To literally take a RADIOACTIVE iodine treatment which essentially kills the majority of your thyroid leaving you with hypothyroidism (even less desirable) and needing to take a pill every day for the rest of your life.
This was bleak
I was raised on organic food and for the most part homeopathic remedies, so I naturally hated these choices. I couldn’t believe that these were the only options I was given by a doctor, thank god for mom and dad. My mom had cured it naturally and my dad has raved about his naturopath for years so it was no question I was going to go that route to try to resolve this.
Now I’ve been communicating back and forth with my naturopath for 4 months about preparing (with blood and other tests) to start what will basically be two back-to-back 28 day detoxs, cutting out alcohol, and putting me on a strict diet.
Yes, that means sober in NYC for the best season of the year.
After huffing and puffing for a while, I pulled myself together and figured instead of thinking how unfortunate this all is, a better way to handle it is to embrace the journey and share it here for any others out there that need this, or have any tips for me :)
I don’t know if this natural route will work or not, but I have hope and I want to share my journey for others who are going through the same thing and want to try a natural way as well, have gone through it, or just find it interesting.
Hopefully you follow along and these future posts don't drive you crazy,
Wish me luck!
